Design & Control

Optimal control and its use for aerospace system design.

Overview

With numerous variable parameters and hard constraints amid nonlinear aerodynamics, control and design of aerospace systems is a challenging task. Optimization methods can help to search for a control or design solution which both satisfies constraints as well as offers a trade-off between multiple desired performance indicators. However, the computational cost for solving large optimization problems has been a limiting factor for the use of optimization-based approaches in aerospace systems. In our research, we combine nonlinear optimal control with results from variational analysis as well as viability of dynamic systems to develop advanced control and design methods.
