OCTOCOPTER

Aerial Tracking and Motion Capture of Animals with Autonomous UAV-Formations for Wildlife Conservation

Octocopter with Camera System and Powerful Onboard Computing System Including a GPU

With a take-off mass of just under 5 kg, these multi-purpose research platforms are equipped with a powerful main computer, an embedded GPU, and a high resolution camera.

They are utilized for autonomous formation flight for example for aerial motion capture (projects: Aircap, Wildcap, ...) and research on related technologies, such as cooperative perception on aerial vehicles, real time pose and shape estimation.

The vehicles were designed at the Max-Planck-Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen and are equipped with DGNSS/RTK receivers to provide high precision positioning ground truth during outdoor experiments.
